Tracking Pinterest Sales with the Pinterest Tag

The Pinterest Tag tells Pinterest what shoppers do on your site: which pages they visit, what they add to their cart, and when they buy. Pinterest matches that activity to your Pins, so you can see which Pins turn into real orders. IndieMade installs the tag for you and reports each add-to-cart and each sale, so you never paste tracking code into your pages.

Where to find it

Go to Dashboard → Settings → Integrations → Google Merchant & Pinterest. The Pinterest section has three connections, each with its own card:

  • Share your product catalog — your product feed address. This is the same feed described in Setting Up Your IndieMade Pinterest XML Feed.
  • Claim your website and Track visits in the browser — your site verification code and your Pinterest Tag.
  • Confirm conversions from your store — the optional server connection that backs up the tag.

Each card shows a status, such as Tag not added or Pinterest Tag active, so you can see at a glance what is connected.

Step 1: Claim your website

  1. In Pinterest, open Settings › Claimed accounts and choose to claim your website with an HTML tag. Pinterest shows you a verification code.
  2. Back in IndieMade, paste it into Website verification code. You can paste the short code or the whole meta tag. IndieMade keeps only the code it needs.
  3. Click Save configuration, then finish the claim in Pinterest.

Step 2: Add your Pinterest Tag

  1. In Pinterest Ads Manager, create a tag and copy its Tag ID. It is a long number, found under Conversions › Tag Manager.
  2. In IndieMade, paste the number into Pinterest Tag ID, for example 2613270281244.
  3. Click Save configuration. The status changes to Pinterest Tag active.

From then on, your shop reports three events to Pinterest:

  • a page visit on every page of your site
  • an add to cart, with the product and its price
  • a checkout when an order is completed, with the order total, order number and the items bought

Products are reported with the same IDs your Pinterest product feed uses, so Pinterest can tie a sale back to the Pin that started it.

Already pasted the Pinterest code yourself?

If you installed Pinterest's snippet earlier through your custom head code, IndieMade reads the Tag ID and the verification code out of it and fills in the fields for you. Click Save configuration to use them. Then remove the pasted snippet from your head code. The page warns you while both are present, because two tags count every visit twice.

Step 3 (optional): Confirm conversions from your server

Ad blockers and some browsers stop the tag from reporting. To make sure your sales still count, IndieMade can also send each page visit, add-to-cart and order to Pinterest directly from our servers. Pinterest matches the two reports by a shared event ID, so nothing is counted twice.

  1. In Pinterest Ads, find your advertiser account ID under Business information, and create a Conversions API access token under Conversions › Set Up API.
  2. In IndieMade, fill in Pinterest advertiser account ID and paste the token into Conversions API access token.
  3. Click Save configuration. The status changes to Server reporting connected.

Your access token is stored securely and never appears in your storefront or page source. To replace it, paste a new one. To remove it, tick Remove the saved access token and save.

Tips

  • Set up the product feed, the tag and the website claim together. Pinterest needs all three to attribute a sale to a Pin.
  • Allow a day or so before you judge the numbers. Pinterest reports conversions with a delay.
  • If you only see page visits, check that the Tag ID is the number itself, with no extra characters.
