Adding a Cookie Consent Banner to Your Store

Some shoppers, especially in the EU and UK, expect to be asked before a website tracks their visit. The IndieMade cookie banner asks for you. It shows a short notice with an Accept and a Decline button, and it keeps your Google Analytics, Pinterest and Meta tracking switched off until the shopper accepts. Nothing is tracked before they answer.

The cookie banner is switched on per store. If you do not see the Cookie Banner section in your Store Settings, email support@indiemade.com and we will add it to your shop.

Turn on the cookie banner

  1. Go to Dashboard → Settings → Store Settings.
  2. Click Cookie Banner in the left-hand list to jump to that section.
  3. Check Show a cookie banner on my store.
  4. Fill in What the banner says. The banner will not save as on until this has some text.
  5. Change the Accept button and Decline button labels if you like. Each can be up to 40 characters.
  6. Click Save.

The banner appears on your store right away.

What you can edit

  • What the banner says — Plain text, a sentence or two. Line breaks are kept. You cannot add links or formatting here; the banner handles its own styling.
  • Accept button — Defaults to Accept.
  • Decline button — Defaults to Decline.

The heading This website uses cookies is fixed and appears above your text. The colors, position and size are set by IndieMade and are not editable.

Example text

We use cookies to see which pages are popular and to show you ads for things you looked at. Choose Accept to allow this, or Decline to shop without tracking.

What shoppers see

A white bar fixed to the bottom of the browser window, with the heading and your text on the left and the two buttons on the right. On phones the buttons sit below the text.

  • Accept — The banner closes and your tracking tools start working on that page and every page after it.
  • Decline — The banner closes and tracking stays off for that visitor. Your store works normally in every other way, including the cart and checkout.

Either answer is remembered in the shopper's browser for one year, so they are not asked again on every visit. The stored value is just the word accepted or declined; no personal information is kept.

Why you do not see it yourself

The banner only shows to visitors who are not signed in. You are always signed in while you work on your store, so you will never see it in your normal browser. To check it, open your shop in a private or incognito window.

Tips

  • The banner only affects tracking tags added through your IndieMade settings: Google Analytics, the Pinterest Tag and the Meta Pixel. Shopping, the cart and checkout are never blocked.
  • While the banner is on, your analytics will count only shoppers who accepted. Expect lower visitor numbers in Google Analytics than before; that is the banner doing its job.
  • If you do not use any tracking tools, you probably do not need a banner.
  • Keep the message short. A sentence or two is enough.
