Choosing What to Keep When You Sync with Etsy
When you sync a product with Etsy, you choose what moves. Many sellers word their titles differently on each site, keep different prices, or simply have not changed their photos. Every Etsy sync form on IndieMade lets you update everything, or update everything except the things you want to leave alone. Your IndieMade prices never change unless you let them.
Where you will see this choice
The same choice appears on every Etsy sync form, so you only learn it once:
- One product: on Dashboard → Products, open a linked product's row menu and choose Update from Etsy or Update Etsy Listing. See Working with Etsy-Linked Products.
- Several products: on Dashboard → Products, tick the products, then choose Update from Etsy or Update Etsy Listings from the bulk actions menu.
- The Etsy review page: if Etsy appears in your dashboard menu, each row has Update from Etsy and Update Etsy Listing buttons, and the buttons Update selected from Etsy… and Update selected Etsy listings… act on everything you ticked.
What the form shows
Every sync form has the same three parts, in the same order:
- What is about to move. One product shows as a card with its photo and title. Several products show as a list of names.
- Which way the data goes. One sentence, for example This copies the Etsy listing onto this IndieMade product.
- Your choice. Two options and, if you pick the second, four checkboxes.
Making the choice
When you update from Etsy, the question is What should change on IndieMade?
- Update everything from Etsy — the default. Title, description, price and photos are all copied from the Etsy listing.
- Update everything, but keep some things as they are on IndieMade — pick this to protect what you wrote here. A list headed Keep these as they are on IndieMade: appears.
Tick any of these to leave them untouched:
- Title — keep your IndieMade title. Many sellers word the two titles differently on purpose.
- Description — keep your IndieMade description.
- Price — keep your IndieMade prices, including variation prices.
- Photos — skip downloading photos. Photos are the slow part of a sync, so if you have not changed them this saves a lot of time.
When you update your Etsy listing from IndieMade, the form asks What should change on Etsy? and the options read the other way: Update everything on Etsy, or Update everything, but keep some things as they are on Etsy. The same four checkboxes protect your Etsy title, description, prices and photos instead.
What always updates
Variations, stock and personalization are always updated, whichever option you pick. The form reminds you of this just under the checkboxes. The Etsy category on the product is also refreshed on every pull, because it is IndieMade's record of which Etsy category the listing uses.
Tips
- Not sure? Leave Update everything selected. It is the right choice for most sellers who keep both shops the same.
- If you have ever edited a price on IndieMade that you do not want Etsy to overwrite, tick Price every time you update from Etsy.
- Ticking Photos is the quickest way to speed up a large bulk update when your photos have not changed.
- Your choice is for this sync only. The form goes back to Update everything next time.
