Adding a Newsletter Sign-up Pop-up to Your Store

You can show visitors a newsletter sign-up pop-up on your store without adding any code to your site. Once your shop is connected to Mailchimp, IndieMade already places Mailchimp's code on every page of your store — so a pop-up you design in Mailchimp appears on your site on its own.

You design the pop-up in Mailchimp: what it says, how it looks, when it appears and who sees it. IndieMade's job is to make sure Mailchimp's code is on your store, and it does that for you.

Before you start

Your shop needs to be connected to Mailchimp with an audience chosen. See Mailchimp Integration if you haven't done that yet.

Check that your tracking script is verified

This is the step that catches most people out. Mailchimp will not show your pop-up until it has verified that its code is on your store. If you build a pop-up and nothing appears on your site, this is almost always why.

  1. On your IndieMade Dashboard, click Mailchimp in the left menu.
  2. Look at the Tracking script box near the top of the page.
  3. If it says Verified, you're ready to go.
  4. If it says Not verified, open your shop's front page once in another browser tab, come back, and click Check connection. Mailchimp can take a few minutes to confirm, so reload the page shortly afterwards.

Setting up the pop-up

  1. On your IndieMade Dashboard, click Mailchimp in the left menu.
  2. Find the Newsletter sign-up pop-up section.
  3. Click Set up the pop-up in Mailchimp. This opens your audience's sign-up forms page at Mailchimp in a new tab.
  4. Choose Subscriber pop-up.
  5. Design your pop-up — the wording, the colors, and what you want to collect.
  6. Choose when it appears. Mailchimp lets you set a delay, or show it when someone is about to leave.
  7. Publish it in Mailchimp.

That's it. There is nothing to switch on back at IndieMade, and nothing to paste into your site.

If your pop-up doesn't appear

  1. Check that your tracking script is verified, using the steps above. This is by far the most common cause.
  2. Check that you published the pop-up in Mailchimp. Designing it isn't enough on its own.
  3. Try a private or incognito browser window. Mailchimp remembers when it has already shown a pop-up to someone, so you often won't see it a second time in the same browser.

If we already installed a pop-up for you

Some stores had a pop-up added by hand by IndieMade support, before this was something you could set up yourself. If yours is one of them, the Newsletter sign-up pop-up section will say so and list the pages it appears on.

In that case, building a second pop-up in Mailchimp would show both. You can change or remove the older one under Settings > Advanced > Add to Head, or contact support and we'll take it out for you.

Another way to ask

A pop-up isn't the only way to grow your list. You can also add a newsletter tick-box to your checkout, so shoppers can opt in while they're buying. Go to Settings > Integrations > Mailchimp and turn on Ask shoppers to join my newsletter when they check out. You choose the wording that appears beside the tick-box.
